Creating Through Crisis: How Pandemic Became a Turning Point

During the Covid-19 Pandemic, there were rules restricting social and economic activities that made many sectors experience difficult times. The decline in people’s purchasing power also caused many small businesses in Indonesia to eventually collapse and be unable to survive. However, in the midst of uncertainty, there is actually room to explore and create something new that is meaningful. Deshin Handmade continues to try to adapt by strengthening promotional activities on digital platforms to market their products. For Deshin Handmade, this pandemic is a challenge as well as a great opportunity to innovate and strengthen the existence of MSMEs in the digital era.
One of the main needs for the society during the pandemic is personal protective equipment, especially masks. The government and the society have begun to encourage the use of cloth masks as everyday protection. Seeing this, Deshin Handmade responded quickly. Armed with creativity and sewing skills, cloth masks with cute and colorful motifs began to be produced, targeting a market that wanted to stay safe but still look attractive. In the end, Deshin Handmade’s mask products received a positive response and sold in large quantities, especially in early 2021.
During the quarantine and social restrictions, Deshin Handmade also used the time to increase their existence on social media. Relying on Instagram and Facebook, businesses still reach customers even without physical exhibitions. Even so, Deshin Handmade still participates in several exhibitions that are held on a limited and closed basis. More flexible time also provides space to experiment with new designs and materials, especially in the development of handmade cork bag models, which are now the main characteristic of this brand.
The pandemic is not only a time of crisis, but also a turning point. Deshin Handmade has succeeded in making this period a space for reflection and a leap in creativity. From cloth masks to new bag models, everything is proof that limitations can give birth to opportunities if faced with courage and perseverance. Then, in 2022, it will be the momentum to rise again at open exhibitions, bringing innovations that were born from times full of challenges.
