From Hobby to Harmony: A Sister’s Creative Journey

The younger sister, Dwi El Shinta or commonly known as Shinta never imagined that she would enter the world of handicrafts and entrepreneurship. Unlike her family who had sewing skills, Shinta chose a career path in the pharmaceutical sector and enjoyed her professional life in Surabaya, far from home activities. However, after getting married, she returned to Batu City in 2011 and gave up her career. At the beginning of her marriage, Shinta felt that she had a lot of free time which made her feel bored.
Seeing the old sewing tools in the corner of the house and the remaining fabric left by her older sister who had moved away, gave rise to a new desire in Shinta. “Rather than letting the sewing tools go unused, I used them to make something unique,” said Shinta, recalling the starting point of her journey. The sewing machine became the spark for her creativity, starting from small souvenirs such as cute brooches in the shape of butterflies, flowers, and small ribbons. Then, she launched the El Shinta Collection brand in 2016.
Without any sewing experience, Shinta taught herself with the help of her husband and video tutorials sent by her older sister every time she returned from out of town. A year passed, her skills developed. She started experimenting with patterned cotton fabrics and making pillowcases, then expanding to pouches and small bags. Unexpectedly, orders started coming in for important events such as campus events and wedding souvenirs in large quantities.
Although she felt panicked when receiving the first big order because she was not yet confident, the support of her sister and help from her husband became the main energy that drove her to continue learning and developing. In 2017, Shinta started joining the UMKM community and brought Deshin Handmade to a more mature level. Now, Shinta actively manages social media such as Instagram and Facebook, strengthening Deshin Handmade’s position not only as a family brand, but also as a symbol of a meaningful personal journey.
